My Response to the Prompt

I felt very strongly about this piece, disguising oneself is something that found very inspiring as a concept. My first ideas about this prompt was about disguising yourself from reality/the outside world, this is a pretty basic idea as that is the whole point of every disguise. But to specify what I mean, disguise to me mean hiding what make you yourself, hiding emotions, intent, actions. Making yourself lesser to draw less attention to yourself. I finally settled on the idea that the key idea behind disguise was fear: fear for yourself, fear you might cause other people to be uncomfortable or annoyed, fear of being open.

This was not just about hiding yourself from the rest of the world, but it is an a two way street. To hid yourself from the world you have to hid the world from yourself as well. So I created this mask, more of a mock up of a mask as I didn't have the time to refine and create a full wearable piece, that shut off sensory input from the world and by doing so makes the wearer blind. I was also thinking about the idea that the eyes are 'the window to the soul' and so by hiding the eyes you hide yourself completely.

If I was to take this piece further I would want to make it larger and wearable for a person. It cold also use some refinement, I wanted the 'dish' where the eyes are to be more forward facing and also I think the mouth has too much detail and could possibly be take back to just a hole or set of holes to breath through; possibly even removing the chin and lower face entirely as the main focus is the eye or lack of them. I did also want to paint this piece but ran out of time, I am not sure what colours I would paint it exactly but maybe I could take some inspiration from camouflage patterns but I am not sure about that.
